Opal gemstones strengthen the will to live and have extensive healing powers and energy. Opals are excellent for infections, childbirth, vision, and the blood. In the Middle Ages opal was often given as a cure for diseases of the eye.
Legend has it that Mexican Fire Opals pass courage, will-power and energy on to the wearer and the fire opals and that the colors give confidence to the wearer.
Mexican Fire Opals are fiery opals that the Mayans and Aztecs used in mosaics and rituals between 1200 and 1519. They called them “quetzalitzlipyollitli,” which means Stone of the Bird of Paradise. It was treasured by them as a symbol of passionate love and happiness. Mexican Fire Opals are found in rock strata running through mountain areas where there are many extinct volcanoes and opal veins are found in cracks or joints and cavities.
Fred Ward, the author of Opals, wrote, "When gems burn and glow like glowing embers, bright and vibrant...they are almost always volcanically-formed Mexican opals." Fire opal mimic the colors of fire and has been described as a miniature sunset.
